Debt Logic
Overview
Update: Debt Logic has become Pay Ready after raising 1.8m see crunchbase here
Debt Logic is a great example of a good UX changing an often negative industry. Specifically the industries of property management and debt collection.
The client came to me with an idea that would modernize a normally tedious process for managing tenants and sending payments to payees. With more than 20 years in the Property Management/ Software industry, the client felt it was time to make things simpler.
However, after bringing together more industry experts and a development team, there was no product designer. Which is where my story begins.
problem statement
Property management firms had old systems that did not communicate with collection agencies. As in; there was no transparency to what the collection agency’s actions were after a tenant went bad. And this problem is why everyone feels like they do about debt collector’s.
Users & Audience
There was 3 different audiences that Debt Logic aimed to prioritize first.
Property management staff with minimal software exposure
Collection Agencies
End Payee or Tenant
roles and responsibilities
My main role was a UX consultant responsible for user research, interviewing clients for business needs, design, and delivery to development team.
Responsibilities
Managing and communicating in a cross functional team
Capturing business needs from real clients
Branding consult
Product management
Scope & Constraints
The client gave an ambitious timeline to bring the app from concept to MVP. My process was jumping back and forth from design and product owner.
Rapidly deploying prototypes
Overseeing & testing their development
Use an Interactive prototyping program like InVision
There was no shared process to these communications. Once a property manager had a tenant unable to pay, often times they were required to give the account over to collections by company policy.
Giving the property management firms a product that could track tenant payments
Make it accessible, resulting in a experience for both sides of the coin.
Process
Overview including notes, basecamp management, and more over the next two months after countless solution integrations, hours of testing, and three large barrels of coffee, The Four Design was able to execute Debt Logic’s MVP right on time. In the end we took Lynn Musil’s idea for making payment management painless and produced an elegant customer relationship management powered by payments. While both Debt Logic and The Four were proud of the MVP’s power and effective interactions, neither of us had any plans to slow down.
